A workable arrangement replaces that with a fixed rhythm. Dated photographs at agreed intervals, a written progress report against the programme, a short video walkthrough at each major stage, and a running budget position. None of this is exotic, but it has to be contractually required rather than requested as a favour.
Independent verification matters just as much. Whoever inspects the work should not be the same person requesting the next payment. Where a family member is helping, give them a defined role rather than the whole responsibility — that protects the relationship as much as the project.
Finally, release funds against verified milestones. Money that arrives ahead of progress rarely improves progress.
